Windmill : Neonatal resucitation device

Description:

A way to empower front line health workers to resuscitate newborns effectively. NeoBreathe: foot-operated newborn resuscitator. Empowering frontline health workers to revive newborns easily.

Need Background:

A high Infant mortality rate remains across developing countries. Ten percent of all deaths under 5 years occur due to birth asphyxia or simply – failure to breathe at birth (estimated 760,000 annual deaths globally). A similar number of survivors are mentally or physically disabled for life.

Technology:

NeoBreathe is a foot-operated resuscitator – it frees one hand of the operator from the task of pressing a bag. This freed hand when used to hold the mask (with both hands) is proven to reduce face-mask leakage by 50% and improve ventilation by 15-20%. The freed hand also allows more effective multi-tasking. When skilled manpower is short – this can make all the difference. For instance, it allows a single operator to perform full CPR – something that needs two skilled persons otherwise.

Salient Features:

  • A single operator can auscultate, position the airway, and do a lot more – all alone.
  • NeoBreathe also includes foot-powered suction – essential for clearing the airway prior to ventilation. Being manual and integrated ensures that reliability is always available during resuscitation.
  • It includes enhanced pressure safety, pressure monitoring, Positive End Expiratory Pressure, and the ability to deliver regulated amounts of oxygen – as opposed to blindly delivering 100% oxygen which can be toxic.

Implementation:

In use across 22 states of India and 10 other countries
